Things to do near Henderson, Colorado

Henderson, Colorado is a community on the grow. As property values continue to rise, new home buyers are looking to Henderson as the perfect place to settle down. If buying a home in Henderson is on your short list of real estate possibilities, you might want to know about some of the fun things to do near Henderson.

Read on and we’ll talk about three of the most exciting things to do near Henderson. From picking and poking at the odds and ends at the Mile High Flea Market to exploring the flora and fauna of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, there is something for everyone to do around Henderson.

Mile High Flea Market

The Mile High Flea Market describes itself as “a farmer’s market inside a garage sale inside an amusement park”, and it’s all of that and more. Hosting local farmers selling their bumper crop, regular retailers plying the same wares day in and day out, and a revolving cast of regular Joes and Janes trying to unload their own used goods yard sale style, this bustling center of home grown commerce is open for business every weekend of the year.

More than just a place to buy and sell goods, the Mile High Flea Market is a center of fun for the whole family. With live music, carnival  rides, and some of the best open air food in the Denver area, it’s no wonder this place draws in more than one million visitors every single year.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge

This natural landscape of marsh, prairies, and woods expands over 15,000 acres. With a rich history of transforming from agricultural use to a World War II weapons manufacturing facility and finally into a wildlife preservation, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is one of Colorado’s richest historical landmarks. You might be surprised to learn that if you lived in Henderson, you would only be about a half an hour away from this thriving environmental preservation success story.

Among other reasons, the refuge was created to help protect bald eagle populations. Now it also plays host to more than 280 species of migratory and local birds. Open seven days a week and even on most national holidays, the Refuge attracts visitors near and far for wildlife tours, hiking, fishing, photography, educational programs, and more.

Barr Lake State Park

For nature enthusiasts who are also looking for time on the water, Barr Lake State Park is just a fifteen minute drive from Henderson. Suited for hiking, bicycling, and even horseback riding, Barr Lake is a sight to see however you choose to explore it. Walk amongst the trees in the park’s expansive woodland “boardwalk”, take aim at the archery range, or grab your binoculars, settle down in the gazebo, and see if you can catch sight of a bald eagle or splashing carp.
